A nice vintage men’s Enicar Star manual wind watch, in the waterproof Ocean Pearl case.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The brand trademark Ocean Pearl was granted in 1962, following a publicity stunt in 1957 where an Enicar watch was strapped to the keel of the Mayflower II, a replica trans Atlantic sailing ship, to prove its water proofing was effective. The calibre 1140 is listed as circa 1965, so we are happy to go with that accreditation. If you have any evidence for different dates then please do contact us and we will be happy to review.
CONDITION
A strange piece of patina on this dial on this example – each of the lume plots at 1,2,4,5,7,8,10 and 11 have small marks around them that almost look like leaves or petals. We’re not sure why this has happened, but it is there and it will make this dial unique. Small pointers like this also show the dial to be original, as a repainted dial loses this character marks. The chromed case is free of dings, but the flanks do show some scratches. The signed crown is original. We have polished the acrylic crystal and fitted a new leather strap. Model 140-21-02.
Interesting fact for those new to Enicar. Founded by Ariste Racine in 1913, he found that he couldn’t register the name Racine as a trademark as someone else had already done that. So he reversed the letters, and Enicar was born.
