This men’s Ebel watch has a wood effect dial and slender proportions befitting a classic dress watch. Model reference 255.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
This is a difficult watch to date, but we do know that the kissing E logo was introduced in 1960 and by 1977 the E of Ebel became curved, and this one has the earlier right angled E. The movement looks ETA based but doesn’t have any identifying numbers to correspond, so we can’t use that, and there is no serial number database that we know of to date Ebel watches. So we have taking what we know, plus some styling clues, to say this watch was made circa 1965.
CONDITION
While we have been unable to identify who made the movement, we can see quality there. The balance has shock protection, but that was quite commonplace, but the escape wheel pivot is also shock protected. You do not see that too often, but Ebel have worked with top end movement makers such as Cartier and Zenith before, so it didn’t surprise us. The case is gold plated, and has a chip on the top right lug but is otherwise good. The crown has the kissing E logo so will be original. The dial looks like walnut but we think this is a painted effect rather than actual wood, given away by a dent near the log that might have split a wood dial, but it does make the golden hands easy to read. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred. Given how expensive modern Ebel watches can be, this is a very affordable example of the brand.
