A scarce watch, this Hamilton-Ricoh combined interesting American designs with Japanese market access. Model reference E1002.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Hamilton were looking to sell their watches in the Japanese market, but wanted a partner to help them. Between 1962 and 1965 the Hamilton-Ricoh corporation was running, supplying this model across the Asian market but they were never made available in the American home market of Hamilton.
CONDITION
In 1957 Hamilton made the World’s first electric watch. With equally ground breaking designs by Richard Arbib, there was nothing old school about either how it worked or how it looked. The most famous model is probably the Ventura, as worn frequently by Elvis Presley. The earlier watches had a calibre 500, which rather cruelly got labelled as trouble – most of the issues came from watchmakers not understanding the new technology. Calibre 505 was better, and this watch has a Ricoh 555E labelled movement, which differed little to the calibre 505. It doesn’t actually say where it is made, but the chances are it was assembled in Japan using some USA made Hamilton parts. All is working well, and we will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner. The symmetrical case is gold plated, and has fine fluting to the bezel. There is some wear to the plate, but mainly at the rear of the case. The linen dial is quite clean, and the dial nor the hands have any lume. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred. The watch is signed on the dial, case and movement.
