Just serviced, this Hamilton Nautilus 400 was one of the pioneering battery watches.

This model was launched 0n December 14th, 1962 and this watch was likely sold in the following year. In 1964 the Nautilus 401 was launched, but it is not clear if that was a direct replacement or if the two models ran side by side.

Most people who have got to this point will already know that Hamilton launched the world’s first electric watch in January 1957. By 1960 Bulova had launched the Accutron, and it wouldn’t be until December 1969 that Seiko launched the first Quartz regulated watch. These Hamiltons, like the Bulova’s, do not use quartz. It was pioneering technology and the earliest Hamiltons had quite funky asymmetrical cases and some of that was to disguise the size of the earliest calibre 500 movements. Later the improved 505 calibre was introduced, and that is what is inside this Nautilus (incidentally Patek Philippe didn’t launch their Nautilus until 1976). This watch has just been serviced by what most people consider the expert in these movements, Jarett at UnwindinTime in Texas, so is running as nicely as possible. The dial is very clean, and the gold filled case is not showing much wear either. However there are some small dents on the non crown side of the case. The crown is the original signed one. The strap is new and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred. Please not the acrylic had a scratch over the word Electric, which has now been polished out.

This watch will be supplied with our branded presentation box and our Certificate of Authenticity.
