The Enicar Sherpa watches are rightly now getting the recognition they deserve. Model reference 124/003
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can date this watch to being made circa 1963. Enicar registered the word Divette in 1961, and different models appear throughout the 1960’s.
CONDITION
The 1960’s were the peak for Enicar. They had drivers like Jim Clark wearing their Sherpa Graph chronographs, and the US Navy selecting their divers watches over Rolex. They also expanded into making their own movements, and the AR series (named after the founder, A. Racine, whose surname reversed named the company.) movements were proving very accurate. The later and earlier dress watches can be bought cheaply, but as soon as you want a Sherpa Dive / Jet / Graph then the prices can reach over £10,000. There were three sizes if you wanted an Enicar Sherpa divers watch. The Dive was 40mm, the Divette 36 and the Mini-Dive was 27mm. The Divette is ideal if you like the look of a divers watch but find the bigger sizes uncomfortable. There party trick is a red pointer on the bezel that can be set separately to the also rotating bezel, allowing you to monitor two different times. The movement is the Enicar 1145, a 17 jewel in house automatic that is running very well. It also has semi quick set date for added convenience, done via the signed crown. To access the movement you have to remove the bayonet case back – it doesn’t unscrew in the conventional way, just turn it 45 degrees and it will pop off. This was patented by Enicar and the cases made by ESPA, makers of the later Super Compressor cases. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
