Eberhard & Co watches are both scarce and sought after, so to get a nice Scafodat from the sixties is a great find.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Eberhard registered the name Scafodat in 1958, but the movement in this watch was not put into production until 1961. We believe this watch was made not too long after the movement, a joint collaboration in development by Girard-Perregaux, Zodiac, Doxa, Favre-Lueba and Eberhard, was launched.
CONDITION
Eberhard & Co. made some very interesting watches in their long history. It is worth looking at their website here to read more about the various different models, and they still use (or probably reuse) the model name Scafodat in their current line up.
We had a dilemma with this watch. The crown is the original, signed with the Eberhard E logo, but it has lost the capping. We could replace the crown with a generic one, which would make it easier to hand wind, or we can leave the original crown as you can wind the watch fine back giving it a little shake. In the end we decided to keep the original crown, as we prefer originality even if it compromises the appearance and functionality slightly. The movement is branded Eberhard 160, and we have not seen any chronometer rated versions before. But this watch is from a time where not all chronometers were tested (C.O.S.C), so may have just been Eberhard’s decision to call this a Chronometer. We do like the calendar though – it has alternative red and black numbers, called a roulette date, and open 6 and 9’s. It is quite fitting that the date is a stand out feature when you call a watch Scafodat. The ostrich band is a used Blancpain one – very high quality but used. We can not ship this to the US, so we would fit a leather strap if the watch heads to the States. Likewise, if any other customer would prefer a new leather strap we can swap that free of charge. The case is 20 micron gold plated, and only shows wear on the very tips of the lugs on the enlarged photographs – it is difficult to see with the naked eye.
This watch will be supplied with our branded presentation box and our Certificate of Authenticity.
