This Baume & Mercier chronograph, in an oversized stainless steel case, has an original two tone dial with telemetre scale too.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
This one is not easy, but we were not going to turn down this watch just because it is difficult to date! The Landeron 51 movement had an amazingly long production life, which spanned from 1937 to 1970. The earlier Baume & Mercier chronographs had an inner dust case, which this doesn’t. The dial doesn’t have three minute international telephone markers, which were fazed out in the early sixties on most chronographs. The pushers are also the flat type rather than pump pushers, again this is most common in the mid sixties. Adding all this together we come to a date of circa 1963, but if you have any evidence to support this or a different date then please do contact us.
CONDITION
This article was published in December 2017, and it states that every collector says “I want a white-metal, vintage piece in mint condition, unpolished, with a perfect dial. ”, but then reality hits and compromises have to be made as there simply are not enough good watches that meet this criteria. Well, this one does, and adds a good Swiss brand and a chronograph function. The article also says smaller watches are being overlooked, as people don’t always want 33mm cases (We do, but understand their point). This Chrono has a 38mm case, which was considered oversized at the time, and the drilled lugs are curved to fit the wrist better. Everything is working as it should. The original dial, with patterned and coloured ring holding the applied numerals and hour markers, also has clear and clean telemetre scale around the outside. The case back is marked FOND ACIER INOXYDABLE on the outside and Baume and Mercier on the inside, just as it should. The movement is also branded Baume and Mercier, but that is badge engineering as the movement was bought in complete from Landeron.
