From the Jet Age comes this Rotary Flyer, in crisp, original condition.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Rotary watches are not possible to date with 100% accuracy, unless you have the sales paperwork or an original advert. Sadly we have neither for this watch, and the word Flyer doesn’t bring any correct results on the BHI’s member only archive. But we do know that Dreyfuss, owners of Rotary watches, registered the trademark Jet Flyer in January 1962. This date also matches a possible date of production of this movement, so with no other evidence to give any other year we are happy to say this watch was likely made circa 1962.
CONDITION
Vintage Rotary watches are a different league to the modern standard ranges. Swiss made, they often have a better specification that their affordable nature suggests. So the gold plating is 20 microns instead of the standard 10, and the movements they chose were specified with 21 jewel rather than the standard 17. The movement in this watch is a FHF 72, in the highest 21 jewel specification. The FHF 72 is the only large-scale produced regulator featuring a free oscillating hairspring. The end of the spring is fixed between two rollers, adjusting actually its length, and eliminating isochronism error. If that means nothing to you then don’t worry – it is high end specification that is normally only found on low run, very high end movements. The case plating is all good, with just minor wear on the lug tips. The plating on the original signed crown has been lost though. The dial is excellent. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
