HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Record were bought by Longines in 1961, and the hangtag which is stamped with the same serial number as found on the case back mentions Longines, so it has to be after 1961. However the inside of the case is just stamped Record, with no mention of Longines, so we think this watch was just after the takeover. That is also consistent with the movement production dates.
CONDITION
The oblong case is the smallest width watch we have ever had the pleasure of offering. It is 20 micron gold plated, and faultless. It also has drilled lugs, which makes strap changing easier. The case back still has the thick red paint they used to use to protect the watches during transit from new – this wipes off with nail varnish remover, but be certain the watch is for you before doing that as the paint helps the value. The tiny case means a tiny movement – in this case a FHF 69.21. The movement is just 9mm wide, yet runs at 21,600 bph – 6 beats a second. It is powered by winding the signed crown, and is working well. The dial does have some marks, but use the video to judge these rather than the enlarged photos as the video is more representative of real life. The box is not marked Longines either, but just Record. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
Longines have recently launched a Record model, making a nod to this famous old brand. Prices start at 1,840CHF, about £1,500, showing just what value this new old stock watch is.
