With a thin Peseux movement and clean, patterned dial this Elco is an attractive yet affordable watch.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the production dates of the movement, combined with the styling, we initially estimated this watch to being made circa 1965. But then we saw the 61 mark on the caseback, and there is no reason this couldn’t be the production year. The name Elco seems to have been registered by Era Watches in 1938.
CONDITION
You may never have heard of Elco, and they were one of thousands of brands to come and go over the years so that is understandable. So let’s split this watch into component parts. You already like the looks – otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this – and sometimes that is enough reason to buy something, but this watch is in excellent condition for the age. The 10 micron gold plated case is only showing wear on the very edge, and with the naked eye will not be seen by most people. The dial has an embossed pattern on it which looks good, but most were ruined by cigarette smoke – not this one. In fact the only significant mark is some dirt on the lume on the hands. Behind the screw down caseback of this very slim case is a Peseux movement, often chosen for the ability to make than movements that are a step above the competition. This is the calibre 330, a seventeen jewel hand wound movement with subseconds. It is running well, and has been protected by a case that claimed to be waterproof (which may explain why the dial is so clean too). The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
