This 36mm gold dress watch from Girard-Perregaux has the calibre 12.09, so called Wehrmachtswerk (army movement).
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the production dates of the movement we estimate this watch was made circa 1960.
CONDITION
Girard-Perregaux have been making fine watches since 1791, so you expect them to be of a very good standard, and this would certainly meet your expectations. While their website would have you looking at very complicated watches such as the Planetarium Tri-Axial at just £632,000, this vintage watch comes in at a lot less. Considering you would need a minimum of £6,100 to buy a new Girard-Perregaux, which is ironically a retro styled watch called the 1966, this is a positive bargain (Sorry but that is the steel version. An 18k gold version of the 1966 is £13,250!).
The watch we have is very good, both cosmetically and mechanically. The hand wind 17 jewel movement was also in military watches, and military watches tend to be built for accuracy and to be robust. Also, like a military watch, this watch has fixed bars rather than spring bars. The large sub seconds hand is easy to read and the cross hair dial is very clean, to the point that it may have been refinished at some point. The case is large for the time at 36mm, and it is in good shape. The leather strap is good quality and only very lightly used.
