An affordable Enicar Ultrasonic dress watch that wears larger than the average watch of the time.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
We can not date this watch exactly, but the Calibre 1009 movement dates to circa 1960. We know this particular logo dates from 1954 onwards, when a new factory ultrasonically cleaned all the components (hence Ultrasonic on the dial), and the related calibre 1010 movement received a high quality award in July 1954. Putting all these facts together, and including the styling, we think this watch was made circa 1958. If you have any evidence to confirm this (or to prove otherwise) please do contact us. EDIT – we have found an advert featuring a near identical model from 1960, so we have revised the estimate to match the advert.
CONDITION
Squared watches wear larger than round watches, which makes them a great choice for vintage wearers who still prefer some size. Inherently they are also prone to wear and knock on the case edges. The unusual design of the three piece case has lost some plate where the bezel slides into the case, but this is not noticeable on the wrist. The acrylic crystal is good, with no edge chips, and the 20mm blue leather strap is new. The movement is running well, but the date isn’t sitting squarely in the date window. The original crown is signed, and the unrestored dial is very good (probably helped by the waterproof case – Mr Racine of Enicar used to strap his watches to the keel of trans-Atlantic boats to prove their waterproofing!)
