With a case that mimics the shape of the human eye, this ladies Rotary does stand out from the crowd.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
This is not an easy watch to date. Rotary were founded in 1895, and the used their winged wheel logo from the start. The movement used in this watch was first launched in 1936, but this is a later version with shock protection. As the case and bracelet are not solid gold we can not use any hallmark to help either. But the font of the Rotary name was different in the 1940’s and early fifties, so we are going to say this watch might have been made somewhere near 1958.
CONDITION
Due to the difficulty in dating Rotary watches, we don’t buy too many. When we do they have to be good, and we think this ladies Rotary qualifies as good. As well as the unusual case shape, which is gold plated to a good thickness of 20 microns, we have the bracelet that is actually rolled gold – a thin sheet of gold is wrapped around a base metal to provide a very hard wearing yet decorative combination. The movement is a 17 jewel AS1012, and it is running nicely. The dial is quite clean, which can be important with small watches to make sure they are still legible. The brown mark near the top lug you can see in some photos has been cleaned off, and this improvement is shown in the video.
