A Space associated watch you maybe haven’t heard of, this Camy Sputnik is large for it’s day and interesting too.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Sputnik 1, the first satellite launched into space, was sent up on 4th October 1957 as the Soviet Union took the lead in the space race. The word Sputnik would have meant nothing to most people before then, and the movement dates to the fifties, so we are having an educated guess this was made circa 1958.
CONDITION
The name Sputnik is pure marketing – we can find no evidence this model of watch or any Camy watch was used by the space program of any country. But it does reflect of the time of early space exploration, and how influential these events were in everyday life. Despite the 30mm case, the watch wears larger because of the rectangular case – it covers more worst than a round watch and the wide strap maximises this feeling. The case is nicely put together, in a clamshell design to help water resistance. There is a medallion on the case back that may be gold, like on the Omega Constellation, but we can not prove that. The dial is slightly curved over the round movement, and the striped pattern is interesting on the eye. There is some staining to the edges, which shows up far worse in the photo without the glass fitted than in real life. The movement is an ETA 1093 manual wind, and it has the calendar at 6 to aid the symmetry of the design. The acrylic glass is likely the original, with a magnifier for the date under the glass. The crown is the original, albeit with the gold plating worn off. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
