This simple Benfre men’s watch could easily be mistaken for a more expensive watch than it is.

HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?

Benfre is not a brand we have experienced before, but some research shows the company was founded on 27th September 1956 in New York.  As they were probably trying to import Swiss watches to their design and it would take time to build orders and ship the watches, we estimate this watch was made circa 1958.  This matches the production dates of the movement too.

CONDITION

The watch is not without patina, but in this case it seems to add to the watch.  The dial has a yellow tinge to each of the applied markers, but it is very evenly distributed.  The hands are not tarnished, but the hour hand has been bent at some point, possibly at service.  The tail of the hour hand has also dragged across the dial, leaving a neat circle near the centre of the dial.  The case does have light pitting to the chrome too, but it is a good size – most watches of this period were around 32 mm, and the larger watch suits modern tastes better in general.  The strap is a lightly worn Italian leather item with chrome buckle to match the case.  The screw down case back is a nice touch, and does show tool marks from opening attempts before.

This watch will be supplied with our Certificate of Authenticity.
