Zorro is a brand we have never heard of, but it is a good looking 38mm chronograph in an 18k gold case.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
We don’t have many clues for this watch. Nothing online appears for Zorro watches, and the hallmark is a Swiss one that has no date codes. The movement was in production between 1937 and 1970, which doesn’t narrow things down much either! But the chronograph counter does have 3 minute markers, for timing international calls that were charged in three minutes blocks and were expensive, and that was a popular feature in the 1950’s. The reason we estimate 1957 is that this was the year that the Disney TV show Zorro was launched – but that could be a coincidence.
CONDITION
When you see the price and spec of this watch you might be tempted to believe we have got the price wrong, but there are gold chronographs and there are gold chronographs! Visually this may be similar to a Longines for example of the same period, but the Longines will be many times the price of this Zorro. The reason is in the details. Yes, this is 18k gold but the case is hollow and quite thin, so you will see various dents and imperfections. The bottom right lug has had a repair too, which is invisible which a strap fitted and secure but obvious with the strap removed. The movement is a Landeron 48, which is a reliable but basic cam switched powerhouse whereas higher end movement use pillar wheel or column wheel switching. On the plus side is the condition of the dial and hands, which only have minor marks, and the watch is fully working and running nicely. It is also much larger than many watches of the period. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
