With their early in-house automatic movement and patented waterproof case, this Roamer Rotopower looks fantastic for its age.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The movement in this watch was in production between 1956 and 1960, but in 1955 Roamer got an additional four patents for their waterproof cases. So this has the new movement in the original, two patent case, so must be close to the start of the movement production dates.
CONDITION
Calibre 420 was the second in house automatic movement designed and produced my MST, Roamer’s movement company. Housed in the complex but technically brilliant patented case it is as clean today as it was when fitted – taking these cases apart requires skills and tools beyond many tinkerers, and you will find many of these with tool marks on the back from inexperienced people trying to open the watch. That waterproof case is also the reason the dial looks so nice all these decades on. During this time Roamer had a logo that it was rumoured Rolex strongly objected to as it resembled their crown – they have a point to be fair! The case that holds the watch is stainless steel, and this slides into a chromed outer case that has the lugs on. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
