A dream watch for any Ulysse Nardin collector, this automatic has a patterned dial we have never seen before.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The movement used in this watch was launched in 1955, and later versions of this movement had a slight technical difference that this watch doesn’t have, so it must be from 1955 or shortly after.
CONDITION
Let’s start with that special dial. A floral, art nouveau pattern has been embossed on the dial before it was painted a deep red. In addition there are stones at 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10 and 11 that may be diamonds – they are small but you do see them catch the light nicely. The case is 10k gold capped, so this watch was probably intended for the US market when new and none of the etching on the bezel appears to be rubbed. The case has a very nicely engraved screw down case back, unusual for the time, and when it is removed it reveals the Ulysse Nardin signed ETA 2452 17 jewel automatic movement with calendar ticking away nicely. The date can be semi quick set, and it is in red text to compliment the dial colour. The bracelet is not signed by Ulysse Nardin, but it is by USA firm Duchess and the gold parts are gold filled – this is not a new bracelet and may be the original choice, but we also show the watch on a cherry red leather strap to compliment the dial – you can have the leather strap if you prefer it. The bracelet is quite long and has been cleaned in our ultrasonic bath. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement and crown.
