While Sully is not a brand that most people have heard of, the Venus 203 is a movement that is very well respected and this is a clean example.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
These movements were very popular in the mid 50’s, and this fits the styling too. With the lack of other dating material we are happy to say this watch was made circa 1955.
CONDITION
This is a watch that we bought knowing that we could not pin it on a particular year exactly, but when it is this nice and with a quality movement we had to buy it. The movement is used by a variety of manufacturers in the 1950’s, from Rotary to Breitling and quite a few in between. Sully were based in the Swiss heart of watchmaking, La Chaux-de-Fonds, but little evidence of them seems to survive There were hundreds of companies who had cases and dials made, fitting ebauche movements off the shelf and ran for a decade or so before disappearing, and sully seem to fit that mould. On this evidence this is a shame – the print on the dial is very good, and in three colours too. The calendar numbers around the outer edge are all there in blue print and not rubbed, and the paint on the tip of the calendar hand matches perfectly. The only red is the word INCABLOC, indicating this movement has shock protection. You have a sub seconds dial, and pushers at 2, 4 and 10 to advance the calendar if required – the pusher at 10 to advance the date doesn’t work fully every time, but the day can be set by advancing the hands. The other pushers work fine.
