The kaleidoscopic effect of the Ernest Borel Cocktail watches second ‘hand’ is quite captivating, and unique.

HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?

Borel launched the Cocktail range of watches in 1953, after registering the Patent in 1952.  Initially they were only in ladies sizes, but we have an article from May 1954 showing they were about the launch the men’s sizes like this one.  The movement also dates to the 1950’s, so we think this is a fairly early one.  We have got copies of adverts from 1953 and 1956 featuring this model to refer to, so we must be pretty close.

CONDITION

The idea is different, but the way it is made is simple.  Instead of a seconds hand, this watch uses a clear disc to move instead of a seconds hand.  This passes over a brass disc with the same pattern that is the minute hand, while the hour hand is more conventional and has a wide tip – this is painted red and the only part of the hand you see.  We have found a picture of the same model, stripped down, which helps explain it better.  But the video is the best way to see the effect this has.  The chapter ring is skeletonised, and with the clear case back this means you can see right through the edge of the watch.  But you can also see the ETA 1311 movement and how the winding stem has been hidden behind three.  It is all working well and features things like chantons housing some of the jewels, a high end feature rarely seen anymore.  The condition of the gold plated case is excellent – partly because the plating is thick (40 microns, where 10 or 20 is more normal).  The case has those unusual lugs, and was made by EPSA who went on to develop the Super Compressor cases for divers watches.  The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.

This watch will be supplied with our branded presentation box and our Certificate of Authenticity.
