In 1954 Mido introduced the Powerwind system, which simplified the components needed to make a watch wind itself automatically.

HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?

Mido registered the term Powerwind in June 1954, and we have an advert from the same year.  By the end of 1955 Radium had stopped being used for luminous hands, and by checking this watch we know this has the original radium hands.  So this watch must be either late 1954 or early 1955.

CONDITION

This watch has obvious patina to the dial, which some people love and others do not.  It does show that the dial is original, and we would not recommend having the dial redone – a watch can only be original once.  The hands are also original, but some of the lume from the hour hand has dropped out.  The acrylic glass and the case are good.  The movement is the Powerwind’s main selling point, and the 917P movement is clean and running very well.  The watch is on an expanding bracelet from Henry & Cie of Geneva, for which we have found an original advert.  These seem to be quite collectible in their own right.  One of the links has lost its spring, but the whole bracelet has been ultrasonically cleaned.

This watch will be supplied with our Certificate of Authenticity.
