Chronographe Suisse watches are always popular, and this one has an unusual yet attractive copper dial.

HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?

This movement was used between 1937 and 1970, so that gives a wide scope.  But the Selado name was first registered in December 1951 and as we are struggling to find images of any other Selado watch then we think this was made circa 1952, before the venture was abandoned.

CONDITION

Most Chronographe Suisse watches were made for the export market, in 18k gold.  So why have we gone for a gold plated version?  There is logic behind it – the 18k gold used in the standard cases was so thin that those watches tend to have dented hollow lugs and the case back can be terrible to remove and refit.  In this instance, we believe gold plated or the rarer still steel watches are the way to go unless the 18k case is perfect.

The other thing that attracted us to this example was the copper coloured dial with gilt numerals.  Not only is it quite clean (it is not perfect – there are a few marks), but none of the red or blue tachymetre scales on the outside edge of the dial in red and blue has been damaged.  These could easily be rubbed if the movement wasn’t secure in the case, or if the lume had lifted the paint.  At this time the lume used could have been radium, which is still radioactive, but this watch has never had any lume.  We also like the three minute markers on the chronograph sub dial, used to time three minute international telephone calls which were very expensive and charged in three minute increments.

The movement is a Landeron 48.  This is a seventeen jewel workhouse chronograph movement, and it is working well, and the chronograph also functions as it should.  At 13.75 lignes it is not small, so the oversized case would have been very large back in the early 1950’s.  But what was unusually large then is now a normal size.  The tan leather strap is new.
