Fitted with a Dennison Aquatite case, this Rotary Super Sports is an affordable vintage Swiss watch.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
There is no database that we know of for dating Rotary watches, which given how popular they are is a shame. But the movement in this watch was in production in the 1940’s. The watch can not have been made before the end of the war, as the case makers Dennison had their factories making war supplies. In 1952 a similar case was used in the ascent of Everest (fitted with a Smiths movement), so we have picked a year between 1946 and 1952.
CONDITION
Post the rigours of WW2, waterproof watch cases were becoming more desirable in the domestic market. Dennison Aquatite cases were used by a number of different makers to fill this gap, and despite their base metal constructions at a time where premium metals were still scarce. This case has various marks, including a crude engraving on the top right lug (possibly a service mark). The movement fitted to this Super Sports is a Swiss AS984, a fifteen jewel manual wind with subseconds dial and it is working well. The dial has noticeable but even patina, and the applied golden hour markers match the hands perfectly. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
