A high spec for the time, this 34mm shockproof, waterproof Ebel has the bumper movement. Model reference 107.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The movement in this watch was in production between 1945 and 1953. We have gone slightly earlier in that time line because Ebel launched their ‘Kissing E’ logo in 1950 and it does not feature on this watch at all.
CONDITION
Bumper movements were fairly quickly replaced with a fully oscillating weight which is frankly more efficient. The weight in a bumper bounces between two springs to wind the watch, not in a dissimilar manner to how Abraham Louis Breguet designed the first automatic movement in the 18th century. Now bumpers are prized for their interesting place in the development of the automatic wristwatch. The movement in this Ebel is calibre 93, heavily based on the AS1250 which will make getting spares easier in future if they are needed. It is running well, but with all bumpers it is still good to give them a wind before putting them on and letting the bumper action top up the wind during the day. The dust cover is still in place, which is always nice to see. The dial has a couple of marks, most noticeably by 10, but it is original and otherwise quite clean. The hands are original too, but the minute hand had lost some lume. The gold plated case is overall good for the age, but the photos always show wear on the lug tips. Those lugs are turned inward like the Omega Speedmaster or Universal Geneve Polerouter, and they are drilled for easier strap changes. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
