HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the production dates of this movement we know that the watch can not have been made before 1944. The styling, and some technical details on the movement such as a fixed stud carrier mean it is likely before 1950, and we have picked the mid point year as a likely production date.
CONDITION
A 36 mm case today is not large, but in the 1940’s it was. Most round men’s watches were 31-33mm, so this is considered oversized. The watch actually feels larger than 36, being quite flat to the wrist, all dial and with the heavily stylised fancy lugs adding to the impression of size. The case has nice coin rim edge, and while the middle section of the watch is very faded gold plate the bezel and case back are steel. The fixed lugs are strong and pretty straight, and we have fitted a new old stock leather strap – this has a slight mark but is better quality than a new strap, using metal tangs to fix the leather rather than glue. Inside is a MST 372 fifteen jewel movement, which were Roamer’s in house manufacture, and this is working well. The dial has clear patina and noticeable scratches around the centre, which looks like some dirt has been stuck under the hour hand. The dial also has attractive copper rivets demoting the odd number hour markers. The acrylic glass is new.
