If this triple calendar Angelus Chronodato doesn’t appeal to you then do you even like vintage chronographs? Model reference 563G15
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Angelus go back to 1891, but they launched the Chronodate in 1942, and this was the world’s first production chronograph with calendar. Only Patek Philippe had made wristwatches like this before, and they were in tiny numbers. The name changed in 1943 to Chronodato, and they went on to be Angelus’s top selling model. In the 1950’s the large date Chrono Datoluxe model replaced this, but lost the month display. So this watch must date between 1943 and 1950.
CONDITION
The Chronodato was produced in either stainless steel, gold plate or solid 15k or 18k gold, and it is the latter and most desirable case we have here. Given that the gold plated versions still sell for several thousand, it is not an awful lot more to get the solid gold case. There were several different type of dial and lug options, and this one has the non luminous hands and dial. The dial looks original and does show some patina, but is still very good for the age of watch. The date hand does have a kink in the hand, but it is not interfering with any other hand so we have left it alone. The movement is Angelus’ calibre 217, and this manual winding movement has a column wheel 30 minute chronograph operated by the pushers on the right of the case, and a date pointer hand, day of the week and month windows in English. Each of these have thumbnail quick set ability, via the pushers at 6.30, 9 and 12.30 on the case, and everything is working well. The caseback still has the Angelus logo just visible, and these often wear smooth so that is good. The leather strap is new, and this uses fixed bars which does limit strap options somewhat.

By buying anything pre owned you are effectively reusing what already exists, but this takes it further and makes us feel good.
