This Rotary Neverwind has a bumper automatic movement, and is one of the most affordable ways of getting one of these movements.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Rotary registered the Neverwind trade mark in 1933, but this movement has a production span between 1940 and 1953. Given the base metal construction of the case that was typical just after the end of the War due to a shortage of materials, we date this to being made circa 1946.
CONDITION
Normally bumper automatic movements are associated with Omega or Jaeger-LeCoultre, so it is unusual to find one in a less expensive brand like Rotary. This Neverwind uses an AS1250 15 jewel bumper, and this winds the watch buy have a weight moving about 270 degrees around a central pivot before bumping off the stop stop to go back 270 degrees. You can feel the bumps when wearing the watch, which is a nice thought that your watch is winding itself at a time when the vast majority of watches were manual wind. Sadly the online Rotary Museum doesn’t have an Neverwind in their collection (this could be their chance!). Ultimately bumper autos were replaced with a full rotor movements, which are more efficient, so this is from a narrow window in watch technology. The case is of base metal, and this shows the typical wear to the lugs like all base metal watches of this period (even things like the dirty dozen military watches are similar). The dial has patina , light in most places but with a spot near twelve that is noticeable. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
