One of the earliest Tudor watches for the European market, with the prized ‘Rose in a Shield’ logo. You will not find many others!
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Early Tudor like this can not be dated via their serial numbers. But in 1946 Montres Tudor SA were founded, and in 1947 the logo of a rose inside a shield was simplified to just show the rose. There are earlier Tudor watches, made for the Australian market, but they do not show the rose in the shield. The movement in this watch was launched in 1945, so this watch has to have been made in either 1945 or 1946. The inscription leads us to think more 1945.
CONDITION
The dial is original, and as such does show some wear and tear. But as the case back has an inscription to a Sgt. M. F. Taylor, of the United States Marine Corps, and the watch is nearly eight decades old, some wear and tear should be expected. The case itself has fixed bars and is gold filled – much thicker than gold plating, as the inscription shows. You could not engrave a gold plated case without revealing the base metal. Inside the case is a Tudor 59 movement, with seventeen jewels and sub seconds. It is running well. The leather strap is new, and as this watch has fixed bars the watch may also be worn on a NATO style strap.
