Before the Dirty Dozen were ATP watches, and the Ebel ATP is one of the most sought after now.

HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?

ATP (Army Trade Pattern) watches were issued to solders for the majority of WW2, until the WWW (Wrist Watch Waterproof) watches were introduced in 1943.  No accurate records remain to determine exactly when each watch was issued, so we have picked a mid point year.

CONDITION

Twenty different watch companies won contracts to supply the Ministry of Defence with watches to fit the ATP specification.  The basic specification was very similar – silver dial, 15 jewels manual wind movement, 29-33mm cases with screw on case backs – but variances do happen.  The Font ATP watch had a white dial.  There is a second version of the Ebel ATP that has a push through case rather than a screw back like this model.  But the majority had the same basic ingredients.

So why is the Ebel ATP one of the most sought after?  The case is stainless steel, not chrome like some others.  It is also the larger size, at 32mm, which while still small today does make it wearable.  Most Ebel versions have cathedral lumed hands, whereas our watch has the rarer candle/hypodermic hands.  Plus Ebel have continued to make nice, desirable watches whereas some ATP brands have closed.

This watch is very honest.  The serial number on the case back has been reissued, and both numbers fit within the know range for these watches.  The engraving is also of the right quality – military use, so function over fancy.  The fixed lugs are solid, and the dial has patina that is only available with age.  Those scarce hands have not lost any lume either.  The crown is worn but perfectly functional, and many military watch collectors far prefer original and patina over perfect but replacement parts.  The watch is fitted witht he Ebel Calibre 99 movement, as it should be, and this is running well.  We have fitted a new NATO strap is a colour to match the lume.

Please note.  Early in the 21st century many ATP suddenly hit the market, and these were often fakes or frankens.  We have compared this watch against known good examples, and we bought this from a well respected military watch collector – the person we normally call for an opinion on such things.

This watch will be supplied with our branded presentation box and our Certificate of Authenticity.
