Little seems to be known about Grosvenor watches, which on the evidence of this watch seems a shame.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
We can see that a Grosvenor watches was registered in 1928 in Switzerland. The case is stamped JBB, for J.Breguet-Breting who were case makers based in Switzerland and this was registered in 1925. The movement is believed to be an AS554 which dates to circa 1930, and this is where we estimate the date of this watch to being.
CONDITION
The watch is unusual in that it uses rolled gold for the case in place of solid or plate. Much thicker than plate, but cheaper than solid gold, rolled gold is a good compromise and JBB guaranteed the cases for ten years when new. Even round high wear areas such as the crown or lugs the rolled gold has stood up well to the years. The only damage as such is to the non crown side, which appears to have chipped some gold off. The rest is stable and isn’t lifting, so we do not expect this to get worse. The movement does not have shock protection, but is running sweetly and it is also nicely decorated. The dial has a shimmer caused by the radial pattern, which is repeated on the sub seconds dial, and it is exceptionally clean – this watch is from a time when watches were not sealed to the same standards as today, and the majority of people smoked. That combination ruins many a watch dial, but not here. The watch is currently on a black woven one piece strap, but could suit a variety of leather straps providing they fitted the fixed bars. (you would need an open ended strap).
