The second oldest timepiece we have ever offered, this Longines pocket watch is still ticking away nicely.  Pin set movement.

HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?

The serial number on the inside of the case back (and repeated on the inside of the dust cover, and the underside of the bezel so the parts have all stayed together) is for the case and not the movement – the movement serial number is likely on the dial side which we have not seen.  But the movement was introduced in 1889, we can date this watch to being made circa 1889.

CONDITION

A pin set movement just means that a button, or pin, needs to be pressed in in order to set the time.  This was replaced by stem set movements, where you pull the crown outwards, but on this Longines pocket watch you need to use a fingernail to press the pin down to set the time.  There is another piece of now superseded technology on the calibre 18.49 movement – instead of a pallet fork, this uses a pallet bar and oversized counter weight.  It works the same as a pallet fork, but would be harder to reproduce in smaller watches.  The fact that this 135 year old watch is still keeping good time after all those years is testament to Longines quality.  This watch hasn’t been locked in a drawer all its life either – the dial does have some cracks, the crystal has discoloured and the hands have surface rust.  The inside of the case has a name engraved that we can’t quite make out – possibly Edugrd Perth.  The case doesn’t have any marks to denote what it is made of, save for one stamp that is too rubbed to read.

This watch will be supplied with our branded presentation box and our Certificate of Authenticity.
