Rado have long been known for their scratch resistant watches, and this Diastar model uses ceramic and sapphire crystal to achieve this. Model number R 20 282 19 2.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The Diastar range goes back to 1962, and the Diastar 1 was marketed as the world’s first scratch proof watch. In 1986 Rado were the first to mass produce a watch using highly scratch resistant ceramic in the bracelet. As we have the original guarantee card, stamped by Goldsmiths, we know this one was sold in July 2008.
The first watch to use Ceramic was the Omega Cermet, which cost nearly four times as much as a Cal 861 Speedmaster and was a commercial flop. More on the history of Ceramic watches can be found in this interesting article.
CONDITION
There is no mistaking which brand produced this watch. The gloss black ceramic set off with 24k gold plated links immediately tell you that this is a Rado. This is the second one we have had, but this one also has the box and papers, as well as a larger case and longer bracelet. The glass does have some scratches and small nibbles on the edge, as shown in the photos and video. The titanium bi fold clasp is secure, and shows some scuffs. We have the outer cardboard box, which is good, and the inner box which does show wear and tear marks. The current version that is still available from Goldsmiths is £1,970 new (at time of press) so this watch represents a significant saving.
