This Paul Picot uses a Lemania movement to keep the case depth down to just 6.7mm – for an automatic with exhibition case back this is remarkable. Model reference 3754S.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
We have had confirmation from the helpful staff at Paul Picot that this watch was made in 2008.
CONDITION
Paul Picot were founded in 1976, and the stated aim was to keep Swiss mechanical watchmaking alive in an era where quartz, LED and LCD watches were changing everything. It would be the equivalent of starting out making stand alone cameras now when everyone is using there smartphone, but it worked. You can read about their history here.
When you make fewer than 4,000 watches a year, you have to do them well. You can not compete with the economies of scale like the big boys, so you have to think differently. Ultra flat watches have long been a very expensive thing to make, and done only by the top houses. Paul Picot have helped themselves by using the Lemania 8810 movement, which was also used by Longines in the 1970’s, to produce a nicely finished ultra flat watch with higher specification than the Longines, and fantastic levels of finish. The Cotes de Geneve striping on the bridges and rotor are among the very best we have seen. The 25 jewel movement also has hacking and micro adjustment for regulation. This example has light scratching to the bezel that could be polished out if preferred, but many collectors don’t like to have their watches polished so we will leave that unless someone asks. The strap and buckle are branded Paul Picot, and do not seem heavily worn. The dial and hands are perfect, as is the sapphire crystal and the signed crown. This watch shouts high quality, but shouts quietly in that very few people will appreciate what you are wearing. But you know.
