HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the warranty card, which matches the serial number on the case back, we can accurately date this watch to being sold in July 2001. The receipt for the credit card transaction is also dated the same date and vendor, Berrys of Newcastle, and was for £385. The cheapest Raymond Weil bracelet watch now is £695
CONDITION
Raymond Weil were founded in 1976, during the height of the Quartz Crisis. Cheaper imports were decimating the industry in Switzerland – it is estimated the number of watch making companies fell from 1,600 to 600, and two thirds of the 90,000 employed in watchmaking were left without jobs. So to start a new company during this time was very brave, and it has paid off.
This model 9117 has an interesting design. The bracelet is mounted by a single, central lug and the flat bezel is wider than might be expected. The jet black dial is protected with a sapphire crystal glass, which is scratch free. The actual case is very flat and thin, meaning it will slip under shirt cuffs with ease. The case has marks all over it, only small but they are there. The bracelet links are solid, not folded, and have a side profile like an aeroplane wing. The only disappointment in the design is that the crown is smooth, making it harder to grip when setting the time after a battery change. Inside is an ETA 7 jewel 955.412 quartz movement. We will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner. The case back sticker is still in place.
This watch will be supplied with the original presentation box, papers and our Certificate of Authenticity. The cushion in the box we suspect to be a later replacement.
