HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the supplied, matching paperwork we can accurately date this watch to being sold in 2000.
CONDITION
The Chronomat range was first launched in 1984, and quickly became a mainstay of the Breitling range. Available in Steel, 18k or like this one a mix of stainless steel and 18k gold. This version has the solid gold bezel, set off with steel riders on the quarters and steel screws. A 44 mm version of the Chronomat is still available with the pilots bracelet at £10,030 direct from Breitling here.
The movement is the Breitling B13, which is based on the venerable Valjoux 7750. So as well as quick set date you also get a high beat 28.8kbph movement, allowing a smoother second hand sweep. The subdials are for minutes at the top, constant seconds at 6 and hours at 9, with the centre seconds hand being used for the chronograph. The sapphire crystal has Breitling’s anti reflective coating on both sides, which is the best in the business that we have experienced. The blue dial is perfect, and has applied italic hour markers filled with lume – these, like the hands, are also 18k gold. The thick 18k bezel turns crisply with a reassuring click, but one of the marker screws at 10 does have a little damage. The Pilot bracelet is very long, and has been cleaned in our ultrasonic bath. Neither the case nor the bracelet has been polished.
To us this is the most desirable period of Breitling watches. They had ensured that all their watches met COSC standards, and had not yet super sized the cases or made the brash Breitling for Bentley range.
