The Sheffield jewellers Mappin & Webb have a longer history of making watches than Rolex do. This Campaign S3 shows why they have endured, even if you have never seen one before as they are quite rare.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the quality control stamp number on the inside of the case back we can accurately date this watch case to being made no earlier than October 1998.
CONDITION
This watch may hark back to the campaign watches Mappin & Webb made for soldiers of the first World war, but the modern interpretation is not short of specification. The case is all stainless steel. The bracelet uses the same material, and has solid end links. The ETA 955.612 quartz movement uses a lithium battery to last 10 years, and that is behind a screw down case back and a dust cover. The glass is sapphire crystal, and has some of the best anti reflective coating we have ever seen, and when new the watch was rated to 100m water resistant. But you would expect this from a good name such as Mappin & Webb – you can read about their history (from 1775) here. The newer version of the campaign watch is also available in their store for £950. The bracelet and bezel has a few desk diving marks so you can see it is unpolished, and the clasp is only secure once the flip lock is fastened. The last one of these scarce watches sold on eBay for a lot more than we are asking, so if you wanted to have the case polished that is still possible without spending a fortune.
