A classic gold dress watch from a company with a great history – Record.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the Birmingham hallmark on the inside of the case back we can accurately date this watch to being assayed in 1997. This makes things complicated, as Record officially closed in 1991. But the name, stock and rights to use the name was bought by Zeno Watch Basel, who did release a few models.
CONDITION
Record were formed in 1903, and their peak was in the 1940’s when they not only made their own movements but also were one of the 12 suppliers of the British Military Dirty Dozen watches (alongside companies such as Omega, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Longines and IWC). In 1961 they were bought by the Longines Group, but the brand was allowed to fade somewhat into history after this. Maybe it is time for a revival? But given how ubiquitous the name is and how we search for things now online it is unlikely – Universal, Richard and several other older brands also suffer from vague search engine optimisation!
This watch has a tried and trusted ETA 955.412 movement which was an absolute staple of the 1990’s. The 7 jeweled movement has quick set date and was widely used by many brands. The case is all 9k gold, and apart from some minor marks all good. The dial is very clean, and the hands straight. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred. We will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner.
