HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the supplied paperwork we can accurately date this watch to being sold in 1995.
CONDITION
Modern pocket watches are normally quartz, and for many people they ruins the experience. Not only are quartz pocket watches not period correct to the styling (imagine a 1920’s wrist watch with a quartz movement?), but also pocket watches are not always used daily, so you may find the battery in a quartz watch has gone flat. This watch has a manual wind movement, so both the experience and the convenience it there, but the modern addition is shock protection on the balance – this was invented after pocket watches had been left for wrist watches generally, so few pocket watches will have this important safety feature to protect the movement.That movement is the ETA 6498, which originally was the Unitas 6498 until ETA bought Unitas. It was originally designed in the 1950’s, and is still in production 70 years later so reliability should not be an issue! The sterling silver half hunter case has no dents and a nicely engine turned caseback without any inscription. There is a mark between 12 and 1 on the half hunter case that we have not been able to remove. The bow has exactly the right tension.
