This is likely to be the only chance you will get to buy a New Old Stock (NOS) Kontiki, and it is the chronometer version. Model reference 1401 47.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
This watch still has the case back sticker on, which shows it was made in 1992. While we don’t have the papers, we do have the book Eterna: Pioneers in Watchmaking – and a similar model is featured on page 204, also credited to 1992. The model pictured has a different bezel, dial and hands but has the same movement and bracelet, and is also described as chronometer rated.
CONDITION
Eterna’s long history goes back to 1856, and today they are perhaps best known for their movement division ETA, which was sold off to Swatch group. After that the Kontiki line of watches is one of their company highlights, which have mainly been waterproof divers watches. The version we have here is a little more dressy than most – instead of a steel turning bezel we have a fixed, solid 18k gold bezel. This helps give a sleek appearance, and aids the slim case design. The ETA 2892-2 automatic movement also contributes to the slender case, and it was chronometer rated at the time (COSC in watch terminology). The watch has the lightest of storage marks, but is otherwise pretty well perfect. The bracelet doesn’t appear to have ever been sized, so is full length. Finding another Kontiki of this period is not going to be very easy, but another NOS one is extremely unlikely.
