You will not find many Phidias models from Vacheron Constantin, but this bi-metal example is complete with the original papers.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the supplied stamped and embossed guarantee paperwork, which has the serial number that matches that on the case back, we can accurately date this watch to being sold in September 1991.
CONDITION
Vacheron Constantin need no real introduction. Along with Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet they make up the ‘Big 3’ watchmakers, having only ever offered the finest quality watches, and they have been making watches since 1755. Phidias was of course a Greek sculptor and artist, and his statue of Zeus was considered one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. But the high brow name didn’t really resonate with customers, and when the model watch replaced in 1996 Vacheron Constantin chose the name Overseas for the replacement, which is a little more accessible.
So while the marketing department didn’t do so well, the watchmakers did better. You expect the best from Vacheron Constantin, and that is what you get. The solid bracelet is highlighted with 18k gold centres that match the bezel. The bracelet on this watch is also exceptionally long, which is great as finding spare links would be expensive and nigh on impossible. The white dial has a linen pattern to it, and is also called a sigma dial which you can see with the small σ symbols either side of the word SWISS under 6. Sigma dials where an industry way of saying only the very best materials have been used, so you know the hands, hour markers and Maltese cross logo will also be 18k gold. The signed, original 7 jewel quartz movement will have a new battery fitted before we send this to the next lucky owner.
