HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number printed on the inside of the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1989. These are often missing, so having the serial number is a real bonus. Omega reverted to engraving serial numbers on later models, that couldn’t be smudged off.
CONDITION
First launched in 1981, the Constellation design known as the Manhattan is still recognisable in the current model line up, albeit larger and now automatic (as the current fashions dictate). The most distinctive design feature is the ‘claws’ near 3 and 9, whose original job was to hold the sapphire crystal in place. By this revision and in the current models they are purely cosmetic. The movement is stamped as Omega’s own calibre 1441, but is is actually an ETA 255 series movement that Omega specified. This is no bad thing – it makes spares easier to find if they are ever needed. We will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner. The 1448 half bar (as only half the connecting bar has gold pieces – there are also full steel and full gold bar versions) bracelet has been cleaned in our ultrasonic bath. The design of the slim Manhattan case with the wide bracelet does make this watch wear larger than the dimensions suggest, and those flat links look excellent on the wrist.
