Ferrari and Cartier are two of the World’s biggest brands, but there is more to this than there seems.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the paperwork accompanying this watch we can accurately date this watch to being sold in 1986.
CONDITION
Ferrari is one of the most recognisable brands in the World, so have always had brands wanting to associate with them. In 1983 Enzo Ferrari signed a deal with Cartier to make Formula Ferrari watches, but this is where Cartier’s involvement gets very sketchy. Cartier belonged to a group we would now call Richemont, as Piaget and Baume & Mercier merged in the 1960’s and later bought Cartier. So this watch was made in the Baume & Mercier workshops, and doesn’t feature the name Cartier at all. The power of branding and marketing! But they are called Formula Ferrari by Cartier commonly (even the quartz chronographs, that have Seiko movements!)
The watch has a Swiss ETA 955.412 movement, working perfectly including the quick set date. The chequerboard dial, possibly another link with Ferrari, is very good. The bezel doesn’t show wear through the plating but does have a dink at 10. The bracelet is in excellent shape and also long enough for most wrists – not always the case with mid eighties watches and chunkier modern wrists. The signed clasp does show wear to the PVD coating, but it is the original sprung loaded item for maximum comfort. This is a men’s watch, but the small slim design could make this unisex today. We will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner.
