With a very cool dial and interesting case back, this pocket watch from Seiko might appeal to more than just pocket watch collectors. Model reference 9020-7020.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the inside of the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in September 1985.
CONDITION
We have searched the catalogues for this model and had not been able to find it, until it turned up in a 1991 catalogue. Seiko did produce a variety of similar pocket watches, and pendant watches to be worn from a necklace throughout the 1980’s, and it seems that a different selection appeared in the catalogues each year. Most of the pendant watches had the crown either at three or at six though, so we do think this was designed as a pocket watch – our watch doesn’t have the tassel shown in the brochure. It could be worn as a pendant though, as it is attractive on both sides. The rear of the case has bands of coloured metal cross each other, and the rest filled in with possibly enamel (no experts here, but it is hard to the touch). There are no chips or cracks. The front of the watch is mainly black, but with a whirl of gold speckles on one half of the dial that catch the light nicely – this is where the catalogue picture is vital, as some people may have dismissed this as patina rather than design. Inside is Seiko’s quartz 9020 movement, complete with plastic protector, and we will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner. The watch is signed on the dial, case and movement.
