Tudor watches are undergoing a great brand revival currently, coming out from behind the parent company Rolex’ shadow and having distinct models. Model number 57054.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the Birmingham hallmark inside the case back we can accurately date this watch to being assayed in 1984.
CONDITION
There does not seem to be many of these watches about. Not only would it be an expensive watch in 1984, but it was also deeply unfashionable – Swatch had just been launched and the trend was away from quality and towards fashion, powered by quartz movements. We have found one other currently for sale, serial number 169, and this example is 201.
The thick case is in 9k gold, and was made by WH Wilmot of Birmingham with the ‘Made for Tudor’ stamp inside the caseback. This was not unusual – gold watches were taxed at higher rates than watch movements cased within the UK to Rolex/Tudor standards. The case back tells a story of this watch being a reward for long service by F.B. Buchanan to Haden – we can not find a company called F.B. Buchanan, so maybe this was a gift from a friend? Inside the case back is an ETA 2750 hand winding movement, with the bridges polished with Côtes de Genève stripes and an uprated regulator. The crown is signed with the Tudor shield logo, something they have more recently made more of a point of using. The leather strap is new, and can be changed for a different colour if required. The acrylic crystal has been polished, and the gold case has been cleaned with jewellers cloth to bring up the shine of the gold. This watch does wear larger than the dimensions suggest, as the bezel is quite thin and shows more of the clean, original and unrestored dial.
