The Teutonic nickname for this Speedmaster Mark V comes from the fact it was made for the German market only. Model reference 376.0806
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1984. That matches the short production run of this model too.
CONDITION
Large mechanical watches from 1984 are not common. The fashion was small, thin and quartz, and now the reverse is true. So when we had the chance to buy an Omega Speedmaster, and a rarer variation of that too, that dates from 1984 we jumped at the chance. This watch uses a Lemania 5100 movement, rebadged as am Omega 1045 and this is all running very well. These are often mistaken for the Valjoux 7750, as both chronographs have very similar layouts and specifications – high beat (28.8kbph) automatic chronographs with quick set day and date, but the Lemania also has a 24 hour hand at the top subdial. This example comes with service bills from Omega dating to 2014 and totaling €600, and is running very well. Also changed at service was the sapphire crystal and seal, and this is perfect still. Cosmetically the watch has lots of dints to the media blasted case and bracelet, so this is definitely not a safe queen and can be worn comfortably. This will put some people off, and others prefer the original patina of wear, and this watch is priced to reflect the cosmetic condition of the case. As the wear is mainly on the left hand side of the case it could be that the owner wore a heavy bracelet alongside the watch, and that bracelet has caused the damage. You may even want to get the case refinished, but that isn’t what we do as we prefer originality. The bracelet is exceptionally long, which is good as finding links for this bracelet would be very difficult. The dial, hands and glass are very good. We have had various Speedmaster versions – Manual, Auto, Quartz, Electronic and even LCD but this is the first time we have been able to find a Mark V Speedmaster to offer. What is extra unusual about this particular watch is that the day wheel is in English – we would expect it to be German if it was intended only for the German market. It could have been changed at service, or a special order from Omega when new – we will never know.
