HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1984.
CONDITION
Ultrathin watches used to be the preserve of the ultra rich. To get a watch that was under 5mm used to mean going to Audemars Piguet, Vacheron Constantin or Piaget for a manual wind watch, but quartz technology developed to such an extent that more manufacturers could open up this niche to more customers. Like the Seiko Credor we recently had, this Omega smashes the 5mm barrier and clocks in at 4mm thin. The case size is small by modern standards, but was classified as a men’s watch when new and compares to what Cartier were selling at the time too – likely no coincidence given the styling does resemble the Cartier Santos. (top tip – if the watch was designated as a ladies watch the model reference would start with a 5, 6, 7 or 8). The square, bi metal case is absolutely what people wanted in 1984 too. The gold looking parts are 20 micron gold plated, and the front bezel and the stainless steel back part of the case are clamped together with four screws. There is wear to the bezel plating, but it looks worse in the studio lighting that in natural light. The white dial is clean, with dots of gold to denote the minute markers that match the hands. Inside is Omega’s calibre 1378, an eight jewel high end quartz movement that is running well. We will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement and crown.
