Made in vanishingly small numbers, this Vacheron Constantin is rarer again due to the box and papers still being with the watch. Model reference 39 007.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the supplied paperwork, which matches the case and movement serial numbers of the watch, we can show that this watch was sold on 20th September 1983.
CONDITION
Founded in 1755, Vacheron Constantin are rightly one of the ‘Big Three’, along with Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe. Every watch that has ever left their workshops was always done to the best standard, rather than to meet a price point. So here we have the ultra thin (under 5mm thick) ellipse model, which would have been there to compete with the Golden Ellipse at Patek. Unlike most versions of the Patek, this watch has conventional lugs which does make finding straps easier. Inside is the manual wind calibre 1015 movement, which has 20 jewels, was adjusted in five positions and temperatures, and is naturally beautifully finished. The case has some marks, and the original dial also has some marks to the edges. The dial uses the Sigma letter (σ), which top brands used to show that the dial, hands and hour markers were all made from precious materials and differentiate themselves from cheaper products. The Crocodile leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred. This will need to be swapped for a cow leather or fabric strap if the watch leaves the UK, to comply with CITES regulations. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement and crown.
This watch will be supplied with the original presentation boxes, papers and our Certificate of Authenticity.
This watch has been checked against the Watch Register and has not been reported as lost, stolen or implicated in fraud, and a copy of that certificate will also be included.
