With the mahogany dial, original strap and 18k buckle this is a fine example of the Rolex Cellini. Model reference 4127.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1981. This was a surprisingly long running model and still appeared in Rolex brochures going into the 1990’s.
CONDITION
This Rolex does not look like the Rolex watch we all have a picture of in our heads, and the Cellini range was their dress watches to compete with Cartier, AP and Patek. The range has recently been relaunched as the 1908, as a nod to the year the Rolex brand was first registered in Switzerland). No thick cases, no divers or fluted bezels, no date cyclops, just good watchmaking. The rectangular case on this Cellini has Clous de Paris decoration all around the case, which is in nice condition. The dial is made of mahogany according to the Rolex catalogue we have, and that means it is unique – no other dial will ever be the exact same. The dial does not display any signs of cracks or restoration. Inside the case is a hand wound movement, calibre 1601, which has 19 jewels and is admirably thin and still uses chantons to hold the jewels – not something you see much of any more. The leather strap is used and signed Rolex of Geneve, and has the original 18k (750) gold buckle still attached.
