A slim divers watch, these Calypso Omega Seamasters are sought after and hard to find. Model reference 396.0929
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1981. This was the first year for the Calypso models. There are pictures on Omega’s own website of two similar models here.
No one seems able to confirm why this range is known as Calypso, but even Omega use it in their description. Can it be a coincidence that the most famous diver, Jacques Cousteau, has a boat called Calypso? The caliber 1337 has seventeen jewels and is quite a complex quartz movement, and has a unique way of setting the time. By the crown you can only adjust the hour hand, which is great for jumping hours in different time zones. Should you need to correct the minutes or seconds you have to depress the pusher at 2 for five seconds, release and repress and hold it down until you get to the desired time. You wouldn’t need to do this very often, as the 1337 was a very accurate movement, but the mechanism is working as designed. The 60 click bezel is unidirectional, and turns with very positive clicks. There is a small scratch to the bezel insert about 32. The dial is heavily marked and won’t appeal to everyone, but the lume plots are all correct and the hands are very good too, despite cracks to the lume. The bracelet is the correct one and has been cleaned in our ultrasonic bath, but it is quite short so we have fitted a bracelet extender to make it wearable for most people. Unlike the later Calypso II watches this watch has standard lugs, so a rubber or leather strap could be fitted instead.
This watch will be supplied with our branded presentation box and our Certificate of Authenticity.
