This Smiths of Great Britain pocket watch is in great order, and still has the original branded box and the sales guarantee.

HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?

From the stamped sales guarantee we can accurately date this watch to being sold on 28th December 1980.

CONDITION

In 1980 most watches in the shops were quartz and many had LCD displays.  so this Smiths pocket watch would have been a left field choice to spend your Christmas money on back then.  Then the strange thing is that it hasn’t been used much either – the chrome is all in good shape, as is the dial and crystal.  The only real mark is the bit of lume missing from the minute hand.  We can’t explain why it was bought and then stored in the plastic Smiths box all these years, but that does benefit the next owner.  This is a pretty basic pin pallet PY Empire movement, not to be confused with the earlier Cheltenham made Smiths watches, and these movements move slower than most to save wear and tear at just 14.4kbph.   The watch does feature inverse setting – rather than pull the crown out to adjust the hands, you push it inwards and turn.  This is shown in the video.

This watch will be supplied with the original presentation box, papers and our Certificate of Authenticity.

Please see the HD video for more detail.  All photos and videos are part of the description and are of the actual watch unless mentioned.  We do not photoshop any pictures, and the images are copyright of birthyearwatches.com and should not be used without permission.
